چکیده

In the Tree Deletion Set problem the input is a graph G together with an integer k. The objective is to determine whether there exists a set S of at most k vertices such that G \ S is a tree. The problem is NP-complete and even NP-hard to approximate within any factor of OPT for any constant c. In this paper we give an O(k) size kernel for the Tree Deletion Set problem. An appealing feature of our kernelization algorithm is a new reduction rule, based on systems of linear equations, that we use to handle the instances on which Tree Deletion Set is hard to approximate.

Tree Deletion Set Has a Polynomial Kernel (but no OPT^O(1) Approximation)

The problem is NP-complete and even NP-hard to approximate within any factor of OPT for any constant c. In this paper we give an O(k5) size kernel for the Tree Deletion Set problem. Approximation and Kernelization for Chordal Vertex Deletion

The Chordal Vertex Deletion (ChVD) problem asks to delete a minimum number of vertices from an input graph to obtain a chordal graph. In this paper we develop a polynomial kernel for ChVD under the parameterization by the solution size, as well as poly(opt) approximation algorithm. The first result answers an open problem of Marx from 2006 [WG 2006, LNCS 4271, 37–48].

Hitting forbidden minors: Approximation and Kernelization

We study a general class of problems called F -Deletion problems. In an F -Deletion problem, we are asked whether a subset of at most k vertices can be deleted from a graph G such that the resulting graph does not contain as a minor any graph from the family F of forbidden minors. We obtain a number of algorithmic results on the F -Deletion problem when F contains a planar graph. We give • a li...

Polynomial Kernels for Deletion to Classes of Acyclic Digraphs

We consider the problem to find a set X of vertices (or arcs) with |X| ≤ k in a given digraph G such that D = G − X is an acyclic digraph. In its generality, this is Directed Feedback Vertex Set or Directed Feedback Arc Set respectively. The existence of a polynomial kernel for these problems is a notorious open problem in the field of kernelization, and little progress has been made. In this p...

Fixed-Parameter and Approximation Algorithms: A New Look

A Fixed-Parameter Tractable (FPT) ρ-approximation algorithm for a minimization (resp. maximization) parameterized problem P is an FPT-algorithm that, given an instance (x, k) ∈ P computes a solution of cost at most k · ρ(k) (resp. k/ρ(k)) if a solution of cost at most (resp. at least) k exists; otherwise the output can be arbitrary. For well-known intractable problems such as the W[1]-hard Cliq...
